Hey guys!i found out that somehow skse doesn't work anymore with older patches (they just don't want to support them I guess and block them totally.) if you've upgraded to a newer patch. Any other/further information?As Fri stated, they use DLL injection, and Beth now encrypts the exe (which is decrypted at runtime). In order to properly inject, they have to update to match the new EXE.I just replaced the skyrim folder with my 1.5.26 backup and couldn't find any method how to get skse (older versions of it of course) to work again.weeeeeird isn't it?Go and click on the archived builds link. EDIT: There is a self-installing version of SKSE available at Silverlock called skse10616installer.exe. If you are a PC TechnoNoob, I recommend using that instead of the.7z file.
No current fix for this issue out there.Any other suggestions? I know for a fact that 1.05.05 SKSE works with 1.5.26.

I wanted to try it (I've used MO for the longest time) as I heard it had some nifty features, and I always had some problems here and there with MO.However, I'm at a bit of a stumbling block when it comes to downloading SKSE.I'm going off of Nordic's mod guide (because I want to avoid any headache of an unstable game) and this is the path I followed. Downloaded.
The current version is 2.0.12. Opened with 7zip. Downloaded it to a modding folder I created for tools. Extracted the files. Copy and paste these three files skse641562.dll, skse64loader and skse64steamloader.dll into Skyrim SE Directory.The next step is this.
MO: Locate the Data Folder inside the SKSE64 folder, copy it, and then paste it to your desktop. Right click the desktop version, and select add to archive. In the box that pops up, change it's name to something you'll recognise. I called mine SKSE Mod. Add the new archive to MO like you would a manually downloaded mod. Activate it in the left panel.But I use Vortex, and I'm not sure if this is the proper thing to do. I turned it into a ZIP and downloaded it onto Vortex, but i'm still unsure if that's correct.
Vortex isn't breaking anything. I play with the exact same setup I described to you. When Vortex installs mods in Skyrim, it creates hard links in the Skyrim install directory that are indistinguishable from the actual files. If you didn't unblock the SKSE archive after you downloaded it, then you'll probably need to unblock the SKSE dlls individually. The easy way to do this is open Powershell and do the following:ls -Recurse $env:AppdataVortexskyrimsemods Unblock-FileAlso, if Skyrim is installed under Program Files or Program Files (x86), then that can cause problems too. You should install all your games under a root folder you have full permissions in.
The Program Files directories are owned by the operating system and shouldn't be modified by users. That Bethesda and other game developers fuck this up is pretty bad, but that's a whole different topic.
That's what I do. I set my Steam library to C:GamesSteam, but if I were to install fresh, I'd set it to%LocalAppData%ProgramsSteam. Whichever you choose, make sure to move the Steam library from inside Steam. Go to Steam - Settings - Downloads, click on Steam Library Folders, then click Add Library Folder and do your thing. Once you do that, open the new Steam library folder in File Explorer, then create the directory 'steamapps' if it isn't already there. Quit Steam, then go to your old Steam librarysteamapps, move everything over to the new Steam library, and restart Steam.
Go back to the Steam library settings, right-click on the new Steam library, make it default, then repair it for good measure. Make sure your games are working, and then you should be able to remove the original library folder.

Whether you get SKSE working or not through Vortex, I'd still encourage you to switch to MO2. As that other poster mentioned it could be that the DLL is blocked through Windows (in which case, just find the original archive, right-click to bring up Properties, you'll see a tick box for it at the bottom, and then reinstall), but I promise you are probably like the tenth Vortex user I've seen that couldn't get SKSE to work and the minute they switched they were fine so, I almost guarantee if you reinstall SKSE with MO2 the same will be true for you. I know what you're saying that most problems are on the user. Don't you think though there's a problem there if people can't figure out how to get SKSE working with Vortex, but the minute they try it with MO2 it works? I'm sure there is a way to get it working with Vortex, but clearly there's something more you have to do with Vortex, something non-obvious to the user.And as far as MO2 vs Vortex goes, yes I'm fully aware they are not that far apart.
Basically all of Vortex's good features come directly from MO2, but what sets them apart is their philosophy. Vortex assumes you know nothing about modding and that you wouldn't know better not to completely trust LOOT. When you do realize that LOOT isn't perfect and you need to make adjustments, you have jump through a bunch of hoops by setting rules and groupings, and then you have to pray LOOT reacts the way you want it to. Whereas with MO2 you can do the same thing by just dragging and dropping. No fuss, no muss. MO2 gives you complete freedom without the nonsense or bugs that come with Vortex.
Vortex is also very difficult to get support for, yet with MO2 you have the backing of practically this entire sub plus the developer's Discord on the off chance you run into an issue with it. Don't you think though there's a problem there if people can't figure out how to get SKSE working with Vortex,Yes, but not with Vortex. Vortex has install instructions for all the script extenders in its Knowledge Base, which is easily accessible on the left-side panel. The problem is with people not reading the documentation. You can't fault Vortex for people not following its documentation. It's hardly rocket surgery. It's exactly the same process as manually installing any other badly-packaged mod, aside from having to set the mod type to 'dinput'.
I'd argue it's actually easier than fucking with the mod's file layout in MO2, and it's definitely easier than the standard SKSE MO2 install process. I feel like the reason people keep recommending MO2 and shitting on Vortex is because of familiarity instead of actual superiority. That or they got burned by an early test version. Now that I'm trying to use MO2, the problem I'm dealing with is files that keep appearing in my overwrite.SSEEdit Cache files appear + meta.ini, whenever I run SSEdit.
I remember in my previous instance of modding a year or so ago, stuff appeared in my overwrite every time I ran SKSE. Is there a way to not generate into overwrite? Does it affect it if I just don't mess with the overwrite at all?I see an option that lets me choose a mod to send the files to, but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. There are so many intricacies in modding, and since I can't find an explicit explanation, I'm worried that I'll get like 30 gb into modding only to realize itll cause me a problem later in the road.
They actually changed things recently so a lot less things go to Overwrite, but SSEEdit isn't one of them. 90% of what ends up in there will be meaningless log files and things, so you can honestly just leave it be.

If you want to though, you can make a mod named 'SSEEdit' or something and drag the stuff that came from SSEEdit to it for the sake of organization. The only thing of importance from SSEEdit is going to be the backups folder, since that's where it saves the original version of your plugins just in case you make a mistake when editing them. drag the SKSE archive (the one you downloaded, not the one that the other instructions told you to make) into the mod installation pane in Vortex. Install it, but don't enable it. double-click its mod entry and in the details panel that shows up on the right, set the Mod Type to 'dinput'. This tells Vortex to install the mod in the root of the game directory, instead of in the Data folder. right-click on the mod-entry, open it up with File Explorer, and delete the 'src' directory, since it's just the SKSE source code and isn't needed for running it.
In the mod list, set SKSE's status (on the far left) to 'Enabled'.
