Rome 2 Sparta Units
Total War: ROME II - Wrath of Sparta Elite Unit Feature. When the Persian King of Kings Xerxes I invaded Greece, it was the Spartan King Leonides and 300 of his royal guard who led the Greek defenders against an army that vastly outnumbered them. The Greeks held off the Persian advance for three days in the pass of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Steam Workshop: Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition. Updated: For Grand Campaign and Wrath of Sparta. Discipline, Glory, Conquest. REMINDER: Unfortunatly, i cannot add the sandals back to the units.
Simple, hoplites suck. My basic set up for spartan armies is general, 2 taritine(the good skirmisher calv), 2 civ cav, 2 peri skirmishers, 7 peri pikes, 2 scorpions or whatever arty you want and the rest are hoplites for the flanks. The pikes are to hold the enemy while the hoplites and calv go to flank them. When the break and run you run them down with the calv. Also, sparta the town sucks and you may wanna take all of hellas ASAP, or do what i did and just leave sparta to rot and move camp.
Rome 2 Sparta Mod
I moved all my armies to britain and had a little fun there;). Im steamrolling with hoplites, pretty much going all infantry with some minor javelin supporti took greece first, made pacts with the groups to the north and west, now im counquering the eastIts all about what units you have best, sparta being hoplites, versus what they counter best, calvary, which most eastern empires use heavy amounts of calvary. Just pick a faction and play against a faction with units you play well against iebarbarians use infantry, especially sword units which kick hoplite butt- eastern armies counter easilyrome uses a nice mix which can be countered by any mass elite armysouth armies use mostly crappy infantry but have elephants and decent range- range wins (pontus or parthia come to mind). It's the faction I'm experimenting on at the moment.I can tell you that Pikemen in formation are your friends. Hoplites in the sides to flank or counter flanking and behind the pikemen to patch holes. Then you work morale with building upgrades, agents and generals and you get spartan pikemen who will fight almost to the last man without retreating, giving you an incredible strong front to use tactics like flanking, missiles or artillery.Except elite units, enemies usually can't pass the pikemen formation wall.
If you counter flanking and patch elite made holes with hoplites, Sparta is a formidable defense rock on wich even the barbarians break themselves. But, you must keep formation so expect to move slowly on offense, and if you're intercepted out of formation or flanked. Your wall and all your infantry crumble. Sparta is all about the phalanx formation with high morale and defense in my opinion. They're the opposite of a rushing faction using swords or cavalry.I love the cap on pure spartan units. I use a few in each army and they're the final rock when the odds get very bad. Again, don't think of them as killing offensive machines, they're more like a wall that refuse to fall and slowly wear down the opposition. This is Sparta:).
I had some serious time to play with spartan units and I understand it alot better now, along with the tips I received. I notcied that even though my battles take longer, I do not incur many losses anymore. Pikemen are amazing, just dont let them get flanked. I use my pikes as my middle, with hoplites to the side and behind. Of course i always roll with 3-4 ballista units in each army to soften up the enemy, always targetting their elite infantry or their missle units if they have alot. Holding a fortified settlement is childs play, even easier than roman units. Pikes in front of the gate, hops on the walls for ladders.its to easy.
Im curious to see how I will fair against swords like rome, though in my current campaign rome is being invaded by epirus lol. I may let them have their fun with rome. Not to keen on fighting those guys. Originally posted by:simple, hoplites suck. All units have their strength and weaknesses obviously. Came across this and thought I would add my bit, considering I was grimly stuck on playing Sparta with Rome and the Daorsi jabbing at me every which way.I found that adopting a strong phalanx tactic helps, and as Mithrandir said, using hoplites to form the bulk of your forward position.
So I tend to place three Spartan Hoplites/Pikemen units in a single line in the center, with two or more Spartan sword units behind each hoplite row and slingers or archers behind those sword units to support. The aim is to push against the bulk of your enemy's force with your pikemen, holding a strong phalanx, before the sword units press through and drive them back. This should give you time to slowly but gradually draw your flanks inwards on the enemy and encircle them; I would also stress the use of your war cry, demoralization and morale buffs to really up the anti when you face skilled opponents like the Romans or the Macedonians.Initial tactical observations? This is my.first. time playing as Sparta and I am only a little into a grand campaign, but from the battles that I have had with the Romans, Athenians and the Daorsi, I can tell you that avoiding units like Foot Companions (phalanx spearmen) and cavalry (even if they are light) is a must.
I get the impression Spartan tactics are designed for close knit, brutal and inch-to-inch combat, so throwing even your most experienced sword and spear units against phalanx units is going to be a disaster, because on top of running the risk of being bogged down by their spears - you run the even greater risk of being overwhelmed.Cavalry units are also devastating to Spartan units for some reason. Perhaps I'm exposing them too much to cavalry, but whenever I seem to get hit by even a small chunk of cavalry, chunks of my phalanx just go splattering everywhere - more so than when I played as the Romans. So yeah, that's my initial observations of Spartan tactics. Hope this helps. Interesting thread. I find that having 5 S-hoplites, 6 S-pikes, 5 H-archers, 2 Cav, & 1 Ballistaarrayed in the above-mentioned standard formation accomplishes a number ofTactical Readiness Goals in the Grand Campagne -so far-1. The ballista ensures that the Enemy Ai will always march to you even in an offensive battle Making the key issue of maintaining formation easy and allowing for an aggressive play style on the campaign map. You will not have to trick the enemy into attacking you to maintain your defense advantage.
Enemies also seem to take a morale hit from Artillery fire and it gives you an instant second entry option in a siege.2. Hellot archers are an affordable long range unit with enough missile damage andunit size/ammo to eliminate often lightly armored enemy ranged units before they do too much damage. This is a good counter for horse archers in particular who are a pain to deal with in an infantry based army keep in mind that an entire army of horse archers and some melee cav. Will be your nemesis as Sparta.3. Having some token cavalry is crucial for dealing with enemy armies containing siege weapons, running down fleeing units, with Sparta's lousy cavalry i would not recommend attacking any unit from the front be they sword spear or even peltast's, Side note you may be able to get access to Macedonia's cavalry by making them a client state ill have to check that out.4 this strategy is effective on legendary when nearly every battle requires you to kill the enemy to nearly the last man.
I am currently 100 turns in and I have conquered the Grecian peninsula up to and including Illyria and Dacia and Paonia and the only trouble I have had so far is the sheer numbers Macedonia was able to field against my limited starting resources 4 Full stacks vs my 1 and a half. But night battles and some careful maneuvering overcame that.
