Lenovo Icons On Desktop
3 steps to show desktop icons: 1. On Start Menu type 'icons' in the search box, 2. Select 'Show or hide common icons on the desktop', 3. Now you can see the 'Desktop Icon Settings' window again.
I have posted previously under 'disappearing icons', but the problem continues with no solution thus far.Win10 home on a desktop, installed as an online update to Win7. Everything ran well for five months. But now, suddenly, I see NO ICONS on my desktop.
I have about 20 shortcuts, each with their correct file name, but no icons associated withthe names. If I click on the shortcut name, the expected program runs as expected. However, when I right-click on the shortcut name and get the normal listing of available tasks; (copy to. Rename.properties, etc), when I then click on 'properties'(e.g., to change an icon), I get nothing.
Not the normal box, no box, nothing, so it is impossible to change the icon.If I open file explorer and right click on any file, and again click the 'properties', I again get nothing. The properties of a file seem to have become broken from their name and from their shortcut, such that the name cannot see the icon.I do have the word 'Desktop' on my lower left tool bar (notification bar?), but this word has no icon associated with it. I have had the same issue on two computers now. One a new Lenovo Ideapad and the one I am currently working on is an upgraded Dell desktop. In the case of the Lenovo notebook the problem occurred over three separate installs. I thought it had something todo with antivirus and tried it with Bitdefender, Avast, and Windows Defender. Same result each time.
After a certain amount of software was installed, the system would crash. There is no common software other than the OS. In one case the Lenovo crashed withonly Windows 10 and updates installed.I document my installs and mixed them up to see if I would get different results. In the case of the Lenovo, each crash was catastrophic. Trying to restore would result in complete lock up.
No blue screen, no errors, just failure. Again, absolutely NO errors, just missing file properties and icons and the inability to restore. The only option I had was to reset to factory default and start over. After the third failure, I decided that as illogical as it was this appeared to be an OS and hardware incompatibility. The lack of errors in the logs was and is troubling. The current computer with this issue is an older desktop from Dell that I bought cheap with Win10 Pro installed.
The first thing I did was swap to a larger hard drive and install Win 10 clean. I have been preparing it to become my standard desktop, installingprograms over the last few weeks and gradually moving files and programs over. After having installed an outdated version of a program and uninstalling it, I rebooted.
The system came back up with no desktop or taskbar icons. A chilling site after my previousexperiences.
Interestingly enough, in this case I can access far more than I could on the Lenovo. On the Dell I can right click on the taskbar basic system icons and see the normal menu items. At the file level, properties are still unavailable. 2013 toyota sienna replacement parts. All iconsare missing from the desktop and taskbar, all are available on the start menu. No icons in folders. No file properties.
No ability to restore to restore points (Failure with error). Control Panel is blank-nothing there at all until I change it to large Iconsso there is text.Since I created only one account, myself as administrator, I have no option to change to the admin account. I am the admin account. The fact that this has happened to me on more than one computer suggests that it is a much more common problem than we know. Many people are complaining, for example, about failed attempts to restore, but not saying why they are restoring. Are they havingthese issues as well?If anyone at MS is paying attention, I have a computer that is currently experiencing these issues that I am willing to box up and send to you so that you can see this is a real issue that needs your attention. If anyone had a solution TO THIS PROBLEM that does not include: Rebuilding the icon cache, Tablet Mode, restore, or clean install, please respond. Anna and Bill,This problem first arose from a Windows 10 update about 6-7 weeks ago. Friends in Brisbane suffered the same problem at the same time.
SFC didn't improve my system, nor did a clean boot. Microsoft continue to try to be ignorant of the problem. Isolved my situation, and that of a couple of others, by doing a reinstall of Windows 10, keeping all files and applications.
This worked well, although you have to dedicate considerable time to it. I did lose the contents (WinXP) inside my VMWare player, but otherwise I was impressed by the results of the reinstall. It is just a pity that the engineer who wrote the reinstall package does not read posts about the lack-of-icons problem, which Microsoft seem to avidly avoid.Kanga85. Anna,SFC has been done multiple times with no success. Please note that this is not the first computer I have had this issue with. The Lenovo ideapad began with missing icons and file properties and continued to a complete failure each time. No chance to runsfc, but I did look at the system logs and found no errors before complete failure on one occasion. On the current machine I have run SFC several times with no errors found.

I do not have unlimited time to work on this. I repeat my offer to send a machine that has this problem to you for examination. In the meantime I will do a clean start tomorrow.Bill. Since you are still having the same issue Bill, let us perform the other methods below:Method 1: Run the Microsoft easy fix solution on thisMethod 2: If that doesn't help, perform a, and see if ithelps. System Restore is a way to undo system changes by using restore points to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting personal files of users.
Please take note that w henyou use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed after the restore point has been created will be removed.Keep us posted with the result.Thank you. Anna,First, as noted above, system restore has been run unsuccessfully multiple times. I get the common error 0x800. I'm not in the mood to waste time running it again just to get the error code. Please read my original post then look up 'System restore fail'.Mine fails every time.Second: Which solution under the 'Fix It' solutions do you recommend that I run?I see a list of solutions, none for my problem.Think about this for a minute. Regardless of how it happened the problem is with the OS. I don't know much about Windows 10 but I think there is supposed to be a%metadata% folder for file properties.

I don't know how to get to that, examine it, or fix it,but I would look there first if I knew how. As to how the computer got to the current stare, it is a major failure of the OS and that makes it Microsoft's problem. I remind you that I have seen this issue over two computers and multiple installs. At leastone of those installs was WINDOWS 10 AND UPDATES ONLY.What I am looking for is for someone at MS to recognize that there is a problem with the OS and be willing to dig for a solution. In order for that to happen, this is going to have to go to second tier support or development. I don't know how you decidewhen to forward an issue but when all the known solutions don't work and you find yourself throwing darts at a board for answers, that might be the time.Bill.
Well first you will need to install the programs of those icons on your new laptop. So you'll have to put in the CD disc or go to the website to download that program. When you install the program, the icon will probably get placed on your desktop automatically.

But if not, just find the program in the Start menu, right-click and 'Open File Location', then right-click the icon and choose 'Send To Desktop (Create Shortcut)'Shawn 'Cmdr' Keene Microsoft MVP - Windows Insider CmdrKeene.com tweet me: @LtCmdrKeene Microsoft MVPs are independent experts offering real-world answers.
