Can we agree that 'The Library', mission 7 in Halo: Combat Evolved is the worst mission in the Halo series? It's a boring trek through the same three hallways over and over again fighting endless waves of frustrating enemies with little to no variety in anything at all. If you break it down, it fails in nearly every aspect of what makes a mission good. The Set-up:So in this mission, 343 Guilty Spark has brought Chief to the Library, a sort of well, library full of research on the Flood and such. Guilty Spark says we need something called the Index in order to activate Halo and destroy the Flood.
Unfortunately, it's four stories above us, which means we need to fight through a bunch of hallways in order to reach it.The thing is, if Guilty Spark could teleport us to the Library (and then to the Control Center at the end of the mission) then why can't he just teleport us up three stories, grab the Index, and then leave?!Because videogame, I guess. The Gameplay:This mission's gameplay revolves around combating the Flood while making your way through the many hallways of the Library. There are no vehicles, but that's understandable.

After all, vehicular combat is just there to spice up the gameplay. So, what does this mission offer to shake things up a bit?Nothing. There are three or four different hallways copy-pasted around the level.
There are some Flood enemies that will rush you and attempt to halt your progress. You take out your weapon of choice, shoot at them until no more comes, and carry onward. No other enemy types show up, which is a shame, because the Flood really isn't that fun to fight. I carried and Assault Rifle and a Shotgun with me and never had to change because there is no strategy to combating the Flood.
Just brute endurance. The Flood also takes a jab at the overall pace of the level. There were times when I couldn't progress not because of a physical barrier, but because there was just too many Flood enemies surrounding me, so I had to fend them off.So, the gameplay in a nutshell is just walking through the same hallway fighting the same enemy until it ends. The Aesthetics:While I'll admit that the hallways you walk through have some thought put into them in terms of the visuals, the appeal rubs off really fast because, again, you keep seeing the same hallways over and over again. This mission is also really dark. I was playing through the game strictly using only the original graphics, but for this mission alone, I had to switch to remastered because the original graphics were too dark.
So these are also bad. While I really hate this level, it has one redeeming quality that made me keep going, and that is the banter of 343 Guilty Spark. I love how he whistles, hums, and (almost sadistically) giggles as the mission goes on, completely disconnected from your struggles. His role in giving you exposition was also handed very well, as he fills you in on different facts regarding the Flood in bite sized chunks, sprinkled throughout the mission. It's also hilarious how he berates your weaponry as being insufficient to deal with the Flood, but only passively send Sentinels to your aid. That concludes my rant on the Library. Is there an even worse mission in your opinion, or do you agree with me? I actually enjoy the Library. Not on legendary, but I like to run through it on heroic or normal and just try to put myself in Chief's shoes and imaging what would be going on in his head at that moment.
Like you said, listening to Spark criticize your armor and weapons, talk about destroying the Flood, yet saying he's glad some of them survived for some reason (I guess because the facility worked). Watching the Sentinels battle the Flood. It's a neat level. It is pretty redundant, though. The most annoying thing about it must have been when Chief later realized Spark had that laser and was blasting Flood forms in Halo 3. He probably thought 'you little. You had that thing the whole time in the Library, didn't you?'
It's not as bad as the Cortana level in Halo 3. Wrote:Can we agree that 'The Library', mission 7 in Halo: Combat Evolved is the worst mission in the Halo series? You can't just teleport here and there and activate the ring. Wrote:Someone clearly hasn't played Cortana. What! Cortana is a breeze to run through. The flood in Halo 3 are so much easier to deal with, and some of the glitches to speed run through make it a lot easier than the library.
Cortana is varied and kinda fun, but the library is a grind.I'm just talking about the worst level in general. Yes, once you know the level, cortana is a breeze. When you don't it can be extremely frustrating. The level design is subpar. The flood in halo 3 are uninteresting to me.
Halo 1 had the best flood IMO. They're supposed to be weak and you grind through loads of them with the shotgun. In 2 & 3 it's just use the sword or flamethrower. Let's not forget the vastly unnecessary cortana and gravemind interruptions.
Playing cortana just feels like a chore and you just run through to get it over with as quickly as possible to minimize your pain. Everyone is saying how bad Cortana is. At least even a bad player can go straight through it with minimal trouble. The Library has spots that even speed runners with world records have to just sit and wait. Whether you are speed running or not, there is absolutely nothing fun about sitting for 30-60 seconds with no enemies, no exposition, no scenery, and no particularly interesting soundtrack playing.
Cortana also has just a little bit variety of scenery throughout the level, The Library doesn't. Cortana is without a doubt one of the worst Halo levels (Cortana/Gravemind moments are the worst thing in video game history), but I have to agree with OP that Library is the worst. Two Betrayals & Keys are worse in those categories.Set-UpTwo Betrayals - Spend your time flying around and blowing up generators just in case Guilty Spark finds a way to activate the ring anyway, despite his following of strict protocols.Keyes - Run in, steal a chip from a half-dead man's brain, not use it in the next level.GameplayTwo Betrayals - You're spending your time running around in the open fighting Covenant and Flood, both with automatic weapons. Also, since this is a level backwards, all the cover is on the other side, away from you.Keyes - You spend more time fighting the Flood (who infinitely respawn at times) than Covenant in tiny corridors.AestheticsTwo Betrayals - Assault on the Control Room backwards with less vehicles and more Flood and Robots.
Also as I said before, the cover is on the other side.Keyes - T&R Backwards and Forwards. When you start the level, Keyes is about 20 feet behind you, but the door is conveniently blocked and you can get by, even with explosions. When you move forward, you also find a way to go around the ship and back up to Keyes, but nope, there's a huge hole in the way preventing you from going across. So you have to jump down and re-do all of T&R over again because you can't blow up a blocked door or jump really high. They're both back-to-back Flood levels, set in dark and ugly environments that are awkward to traverse through, and feature the spawn of Satan known as the 'Rocket Flood' (an enemy that, regardless of proximity to the player, will pull the trigger of their rocket launchers). All the Library has is Flood, the occasional rocket-wielding Flood, and grey walls.
